Proper name [Nottoway]

IPA: /t͡ʃiroʔẽˈhaːkaːʔ/ (note: reconstructed) Forms: Cheroohoka [alternative], Tcherohakaʔ [alternative]
Etymology: Unknown. Rudes 1981 suggests chero- (akin to Tuscarora čárhuʔ (“tobacco”)) + -hakah (populative suffix, akin to Tuscarora -há·ka·ʔ (characteriser suffix)), literally “people of the tobacco”. A folk etymology propagated by the tribe itself is that it means “people at the fork of the stream”, based on the tribe’s lodging area being where the Nottoway River forks with the Blackwater River to form the Chowan River. Compare Tuscarora Čiruʔęhá·ka·ʔ.
